About
Most people know that nest boxes should be cleaned annually, generally speaking nest boxes are a pain to clean, many people have a number of boxes and often it doesn’t get done.
We have made the process simple, the box stays on the wall, just release two small finger spun nuts under the box and the old nest will drop out.
Why are we cleaning the box, no one would remove a nest in the wild?
It’s us again, homo-sapiens. We provide convenient nesting points which get used after year. As a result there is a build up of parasites which overwinter in nest boxes, ready to afflict the new chicks.
There is a second issue, perhaps more concerning. Wild birds use whatever they can find locally to hand for nest building. Animal hair is a traditional nesting material. Today our animal hair is toxic, what kills flees, can kill chicks. The build up of toxins in nest boxes is a real concern. A damp absorbent surface can become ever more toxic. As a result we provide a nestcartridge which is wipe clean, whilst retaining untreated pine as the majority of the internal surface.
Hanging the Nest Box
Select a suitable sheltered position. Local cover, a shrub or bush will always be beneficial.
To install, simple hold the box in the position you have chosen. Mark the horizontal fixing line and the vertical centre line.
In masonry drill two 5mm holes 137mm apart, install the plastic plugs provided and screw in position using the mounting plates.
In wood drill pilot holes to suit the material you are drilling, screw in position using the mounting plates.
Please cut a piece of corrugated cardboard xxx x xxx and drop into the bottom of the nesting tray, this will absorb any dampness and should be replaced each year.
